The motorcycles only get you so far. Then we had to hike a few kilometers with a lot of vertical gain. The material itself is full bodied and thick in the mouth but soft in presentation. There is minimal bitterness and astringency, but if you push it you get a floral experience reminiscent of orchids. The overall character of this tea is on the savory and vegetal side but there is a wild essence that makes it interesting. The tea energy is impressive! This tea is sweet from the early steeps and has a lingering aftertaste. The middle steeps hits your palate like a dark wildflower honey. The shape is reminescent of a birds nest and is called \"tuo cha\". It has been in use in China for a very long time. Some consider this shape to be superior because you get a large surface area in a small package. Others contend that air gets trapped in the pocket which helps with aging.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChangtai is well known for the quality of their early 2000's puerh. Their master blenders created this blend from Menghai area Da Shu (Big Tree) puerh tea trees in 2003. It has been stored in hot, humid Xishuangbanna until around 2013. The body is thick and immediate. The flavor is orchid sweetness with a slight bitterness and some astringency. There is a sweet aftertaste that lingers. It has been in use in China for a very long time. Some consider this shape to be superior because you get a large surface area in a small package. It has some of the richest aromas we've ever had. The aroma is sweet citrus \/ berry with floral undertones. It smells like a mix between a lemon drop and hawthorn berries. It's very enchanting. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tea has very noticeable early bitterness. It feels fantastic in the throat and the mouth. You can underleaf this tea and still get plenty of enjoyable sessions out of it. Once you get into the later steeps this tea is all sweetness. For a little over a year they saw great success defending the skies over Yunnan and Burma from attack from Japanese fighter planes. Yunnan was kept free and critical war supplies were able to be brought safely in from British controlled India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a really fascinating part of history and one in which many people have no idea. Yunnan, and by extension, the tea industry would be entirely different if the Japanese had been able to gain full control of China. Especially given current political climates it's important to remember a time when America and China were able to work together as friends.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn our research we found that just a few miles from our warehouse in China is where the Flying Tigers pilots stayed. Our weekly hikes in Kunming take us to the top of a local mountain where the original RADAR installation the Flying Tigers installed still operates. The airport they used is gone now and has been replaced with progress. It overwhelmed any tea we blended it with. We've sat on this material for years without knowing what to do with it. This year, I was drinking this tea and I looked at Lamu and said \"Buying this tea was a bad idea.\" Then a light bulb went off. This tea is a \"Bad Idea\". 😯\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYeah, ok, it's bitter, but how does it taste? Well this tea has some very intriguing aromas. It has a nice introductory aged sheng aroma going on. It is for sure smokey. I swear there are some hints of a dutch oven cooked peach cobbler in there. Lamu thinks I'm making that up. It comes out strong! 😣 First steeps and your first thought is \"Oh this is much more bitter than I remember it being.\" Honestly I say that to myself every single time. Lamu and I look each other in the eye without blinking as we take the first sip and see who will make a sour face first. It's always her. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe tea can brew very smooth with a silky body. There's no real taste other than bitter though. Surely the aftertaste can't also be bitter can it? Yup! Bitter. The wet leaves even smell bitter. After a lot of steeps the tea really does mellow into something smooth and pleasant but you gotta work for it. Can you work for it?
